Frequently Asked Questions
1
What exactly is happening at the library?
We are expanding and giving our main branch in Sullivan a renovation! The project includes a full interior and exterior refresh of our beautiful 1905 Carnegie building, updates to the 1994 addition, and the construction of a brand-new, two-story, 4,000-square-foot wing.
2
Why does the library need to do this?
To put it simply, we’ve outgrown our current space. We need more room for community meetings and work rooms, modern technology, and our expanding public programs. At the same time, our historic Carnegie building is over 120 years old and needs some TLC to continue to keep it safe, accessible, and welcoming for generations to come.
3
How much is this going to cost me in property taxes?
Not a single cent. The library has carefully planned and saved for this project over many years, knowing this day would come. The entire project will be funded by library savings and potential grant funding. There will be absolutely no tax increases, and the library is not borrowing any money or taking on debt to get this done.
4
When does construction start?
Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2027. We are currently working with design experts on the preliminary plans.
5
Will the library close during construction? How do I get my books?
Yes, the main building will need to close for construction, but we aren't going anywhere! To keep serving you, we will open a temporary "storefront" library right in town during the construction period. (location to be announced later) You will still be able to check out books, access services, and see familiar faces. You can also visit our other four county library branches and our history museum.
6
Will the historic building change? (Is the dome staying?)
Preserving our local heritage is a top priority. The classic Bedford limestone exterior, the historic entrance, and our beloved rotunda dome are all staying. The "TLC" we are giving the historic structure is simply about refreshing the space and maintaining its historical integrity for years to come.
7
What will happen to the current Annex building?
The current Annex will be taken down to make room for our brand-new, 4,000-square-foot library addition. However, we aren't losing that vital space—a new, updated Annex will be built on the property adjacent to the main library building to continue serving our community's needs.
8
How long will it take?
The project will take an estimated 10-12 months to complete.
9
Will you still have programs for adults and kids during construction?
Yes, absolutely! Our programming will continue across Sullivan County during this transition. We are looking into alternative locations and exploring partnerships throughout our communities to host events. We also look forward to continuing to offer programs and activities at our other library branches across the county.
10
How can the community give feedback on the project?
This is your library, and we want to hear from you! We will offer opportunities in the coming months where you can view early design concepts and architectural drawings. We are still working out the details on the best ways to gather your feedback, but we look forward to sharing those plans soon.
11
Where can I keep up with updates?
We will share dates for the public input sessions and construction timelines on our website at https://www.sullivan.lib.in.us/ and at our branch locations. Feel free to chat with April Cox, Library Director, or any of our staff next time you visit!
